BACKTRACK NYHC

Desde Long Island tenemos el honor de presentaros a BACKTRACK una joven banda que practica un hardcore al estilo clásico de New York, pero con un sonido muy fresco, comenzaron en 2008 y su ultima referencia es "Darker Half" (2011). Agradecerle a Ricky que nos prestara su tiempo para esta entrevista.

Hablanos de  los comienzos del grupo

Backtrack empezó a comienzos del 2008. Nuestro batería John, y yo empezamos tocando en su habitación en enero de ese año y acabamos juntándonos con amigos en común y pensar en como componernos. Tuvimos nuestra primera actuación en abril del 2008 y decidimos incluir un nuevo guitarrista. Ha habido bastantes cambios en la formación del grupo pero la esencia de Backtrack siempre ha sido Chris y yo a las guitarras, John con la batería y Vitalo como vocalista. Ahora mismos estamos en mitad de organizar quien sera el bajista.

Vuestro sonido me recuerda al de los 90. ¿Cuales son vuestras influencias?

Estamos claramente influenciados por el hardcore de Nueva York de finales de los 80 y 90. Estamos influenciados por muchas otras músicas ya que cada miembro del grupo tiene una gran variedad de influencias personales. Aunque nos encanta dar nuestra ultima versión del sonido que hay en NYHC.

La escena de Hardcore en Nueva York siempre ha sido una de las más fuertes, ¿es como antes o no ya no tanto?

Actualmente esta bien. Los conciertos han sido geniales y hay un montón de nuevos grupos tocando y teniendo buena respuesta. Grupos como King Nine, Incendiary, Bottom Out, Creem, No One Rules, entre otros muchos han ayudado a que esto sea posible. 

¿Hay alguna diferencia entre la escena de Long Island y la de Nueva York?

Diría que sí. Hoy hay bastantes mas giras viniendo a Long Island. Los grupos pueden actuar en Long Island y también en Nueva York teniendo una gran acogida en los dos sitios pero con públicos diferentes. Cuando los conciertos no van a los dos sitios, los chavales se mueven para ir a donde este el concierto. Para mí, sigue siendo NYHC.

Habeis estado de gira por Europa últimamente pero no has pasado por España. Hace unos años tocasteis aqui  con Terror, First Blood y Tui. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia? ¿Teneis  planes para volver a España?

Estamos planeando ir a Europa y Reino Unido dos veces en 2014, así que esperemos poder llegar a España. Es un país bonito y me divertí bastante. ¡ Me encantaría volver lo antes posible!

 

Vuestros flyers y trabajo artístico me recuerdan a flyers de la vieja escuela. ¿Queréis retomar la esencia de aquellos años o es simplemente pura estética?

Claramente nos encanta el trabajo artístico del antiguo Nueva York. Gente como Sean Taggert, Steve Huie, entre muchos otros tenían un estilo bestial en sus dibujos que nos flipaba en aquella época. Para nuestros trabajos, contamos con gente que siente lo mismo y pueden llevar nuestras canciones y estilo a su propia identidad y forma de trabajar. Un saludo para Spoiler, Doug the thug, Marina y todo aquel que nos ayudó con  todo esto.

El graffiti también está presente en vuestro trabajo. ¿Sois escritores de graffiti?

Ninguno de nosotros pinta pero tenemos un buen grupo de colegas que sí. Sin duda aprecio el graffiti.

¿Qué nos espera después de Darker Half? ¿ Para cuando nuevo álbum?

Llevamos unas 16-18 canciones escritas para nuestro nuevo álbum. Nuestra idea es escribir 20 canciones y elegir nuestras favoritas para el álbum. Una gran parte del 2013 ha sido para centrarnos en escribir y asegurarnos que este álbum consiga su mayor potencial. Vamos a empezar a grabarlo a finales de agosto con Nick Jett produciéndolo en Sunset Lodge en California.

Ricky también tienes un fanzine. ¿Ha tenido buena cogida?

Moment of Truth va muy bien. Estoy contentísimo de que a la gente le guste tanto como yo disfruté haciéndolo. Hice dos en muy poco tiempo así que me voy a tomar un pequeño descanso y me voy a centrar en Backtrack antes de ponerme a hacer otro. No quiero sacar un tercer numero a medias. También estoy trabajando en un mixed tape que va acorde con el fanzine, así que esperemos que también funcione.

Tell us about the beginnings of the band.

Backtrack started out in the beginning of 2008.  Our drummer John, and I started jamming in his room in January that year and we ended up getting together with mutual friends to get a line-up figured out.  We played our first show in April of 2008 and decided to add another guitar player.  There's been a lot of line-up changes but the core that has always been Backtrack is Chris & I on Guitars, John on Drums, and Vitalo on vocals.  We're in the middle of bass players right now.

Your sound reminds me of the 90's, what are your influences?

We are definitely influenced by New York Hardcore from the Late 80's and 90's.  We're influenced by plenty of other music as everyone in the band has a broad spectrum of personal influences.  We put our own newer take on the NYHC sound that we all love though.

The NY hardcore scene always has been one of the strongest in the world, is as before, or not so much?

The current state of NYHC is great.  Shows here have been awesome and there's tons of new bands playing out and getting great responses.  Bands like King Nine, Incendiary, Bottom Out, Creem, No One Rules, among many others have been helping this be possible.

Any difference between the Long Island hardcore and the  new york hardcore escene?

I'd say yeah.  These days there's a lot more tours coming into Long Island.  Bands can do a show on Long Island and a show in NYC and have good turnouts at both with different people at both.  When a show doesn't go to both kids are definitely traveling to the other place to check out the show.  It's all NYHC to me though.

You toured in Europe recently, but you have not gone through Spain, some years ago you played with TERROR, FIRST BLOOD and TUI How was the experience? You have plans to return to Spain?

We're planning on going to Europe and the UK twice in 2014 so hopefully we can get to Spain again.  It was a beautiful country and I had a lot of fun there...would love to come back ASAP!

Flyers and artwork reminds me old school flyers , do you want to recover the essence of those years, or just something aesthetic?

We definitely love a lot of the older new york artwork.  People like Sean Taggert, Steve Huie, among many others had a sick style to there drawings that we liked a lot from that era.  For our stuff we work with people who feel the same and can put our songs and style into there own brand of artwork.  Shout out to Spoiler, Doug the thug, Marina, and everyone else who's helped us with that.

Graffiti is also present in your work, Are you graffiti writers?

None of us write personally, but we have a bunch of friends that do.  I definitely have an appreciation for graffiti.

What awaits us after Darker Half? When new album?

We're about 16-18 songs deep into writing for the new LP right now.  The plan is to write around 20 songs and pick and choose our favorites for the record.  We've taken a large portion of 2013 off to really focus on writing and making sure this record is up to it's full potential.  We start recording it at the end of August with Nick Jett producing it at Sunset Lodge in California.

Ricky you have a fanzine too, have

good acceptance?
 

Moment Of Truth has been doing great.  I'm stoked that people like it as much as I had fun making it.  I did 2 of them in a really short period of time so i'm going to take a short break and focus on all things Backtrack before I start another one.  I don't want to half-ass the 3rd issue...I'm actually also working on a mix tape to co-inside with it, so hopefully that works out too.
